Slow Rebelling

Opening the live music segment will be 'Slow Rebelling' who will perform their full band debut.

The female duo master feminist love songs, as well socio-political attacks - wrapped up in a satirical sentiment / performed with true Girl-Grit.

The Scorpios

Our headliners for the evening hail from Central Sudan and now based in London after fleeing the fundamentalist takeover in that region, the Scorpios are a band that melds Arabic rhythms and guitar chops (and a kind of swooning cyclical ecstasy) with a raw Eastern funk feel,

Keeping in theme with the Same Wave ideologies, the Scorpios properly dismantle cultural barriers in pursuit of a unifying rhythmic bliss. Heavy bass, synths, horns and percussions drive through traditional Sudanese forms to create a sound that owes as much to Detroit as it do to Khartoum.

At the Same Wave launch, the Scorpios will be playing a selection of old favourites and brand new upcoming songs.

Stunflower, as their name might suggest, stun fusions of Indian classical music elements with eternally evolving rock, funk, reggae, EDM. Based in South London, the trio of bass, drums and guitar often come equipped with Indian Trad singers, and even a dancer who’s rattling ankles provide another layer of percussion.

Grounded in the groove, Stunflower are here to bring a body-and-soul-shaking-set to the Same Wave Musicians Series.

Charity Sentiment

Music has the power to strengthen, unite, and heal communities even across borders. Since the so-called ‘refugee crisis’ in 2015, the public have engaged with discourse surrounding global migration. Of course, misconceptions have emerged through false media reports and political tropes however, so too has a community which stands in the name of diversity and humanity. Through showcasing international music and connecting like-minded charities, SWMS aims to empower and solidify the networks which stand together and in solidarity with refugees and migrants by creating a safe and celebrated space of global art and sound.

The Charities that will benefit and be present at our first event are:

1. Youth Development Programme at The Refugee Council (Croydon)

In addition to the legal advice that the Refugee Council offers, the Youth Development Programme in Croydon offers young refugees and migrants educational and extra curricular support. Every weekday volunteers host free English classes, trips in and around the UK, and personal and emotional support to ensure that the young people, who have newly arrived in the UK, feel settled and positive about achieving their dreams for the future.

2. SOAS Detainee Support (SDS)

The gross illegal deportation of citizens is something that touches our hearts here at Same Wave. SOAS Detainee Support is an abolitionist group working in solidarity with people detained under immigration powers.
They visit and offer practical and emotional support to people fighting for release, and they campaign for an end to detention and deportations.
