The Harveys bar will be back serving the best local beers and ales, along with the Bug Bar team who will be back once again delivering delicious and summery festival cocktails from their converted VW van! Check out the festival café for you coffee, tea, cake and snack needs and you should be covered for the weekend.

Another brand new feature we are excited about is the Kite Spa and Health Zone, which will feature an outdoor under tent spa area with two hot tubs, sports massage options and health and wellbeing advice from experts at Nuffield Health. Set up in full view of the stage – so if you have had a kite sesh and fancy a hot tub with your mates along with a glass of something nice while watching the bands – you go for it!
The Family Zone
The Family Zone returns for the kids to enjoy, with plans for kitemaking, face painting, outdoor games and loads more to entertain the kiters of the future!
Talks Stage & Jumbo Screen
And don’t forget to check out the full festival talks schedule (produced nearer the time) for details of all the presentations from the main stage and Jumbo screen – we have some fantastic talks already lined up and some great pro’s, industry experts and media guru’s ready to chat through everything kitesurfing – so grab a cuppa and come and have a listen!
Access to the festival itself remains 100% free, and we are always grateful for charity donations around the various activities. Thank you to the wonderful people at Havant Borough Council for all their support in bringing the festival back to Hayling Island once again.
Firstly, the massive brands tent has had to be extended by over 50% to 90+ metres long to cater for all the brands we have attending this year. Now brands know what to expect, there is a lot of chat about innovative stands being designed, great value deals for everyone at the festival and more kite gear to check out than will have ever been in one place in the UK before!
Kitesurfing Armada regulars will not need us to tell them that wind is a fickle thing! Over the last few years at the festival we have had everything from gale force to sea breeze to enough for foiling and not much more – we are in the hands of mother nature on this one and this year will be no different. But we are all hoping for the dream of a nice sunny weekend with a good sea breeze allowing us complete all the kiting activities planned, but as ever we will work with what we get wind wise and all have a great time regardless!
The festival will take place on the 9-11 June 2017 and you can kite on any one of these days so long as you are wearing your bespoke rash vest, which you can collect when you arrive and register. Recreational kitesurfing will be available any time it is windy – except when the World Record attempt is on, which will then take priority. As the wind allows, we will be planning a load of kitesurfing activities from big air comps, foiling and pro clinics, boardercross, the British Kitesurfing Championships, taster sessions for beginners, the Kite, SUP, Run Charity Challenge and more.
This year there is so much going on on the water. And CBK Beach provides an amazing spot for kitesurfing, with sand bars delivering butter flat water around low tide and fun conditions at all other times! As we get closer to the weekend we will have a better idea of the wind we will have and can ensure the right activities take place.
The World Record attempt is just one of the many kitesurfing activities going on, and after the successful breaking of the Record last year, previously held by South Africa, we will be looking to extend our current record of 423 and break through the magic 500 kitesurfers barrier if we can! We know the kitesurfing community will be out in force at the festival, so if we get the wind as well – the Record is surely on once again.
The attempt will take place on either Saturday or Sunday depending on the wind, around the other kitesurfing activities taking place. As usual, a full safety video explaining all the plans will come out before the event.
Kite SUP Run Charity Challenge
We love the idea of bringing together kiting communities from across the UK and further afield, kiting together, breaking World Records and having a kitesurfing festival that everyone can enjoy. But alongside this, a key part of the Virgin Kitesurfing Armada is always to raise funds for charity. (See more below on this)
Every year people remember the massive Armada of 2013, our first event, a 43 mile behemoth that began in 15 knots and ended in 40. It was pretty epic and an amazing platform for the event – but as the numbers grew, safely running the mass downwinder became increasingly challenging, if not impossible, to achieve. However, we all still love big downwinders with our mates – so this year we are offering you the chance to recapture something of the original Armada for yourselves…read on!
We have been thinking about a new charity Challenge at the festival for a while. It needs to be engaging as an idea, manageable around the Hayling area without people heading off for miles down the coast, challenging enough to deserve some sponsorship but fun enough that people want to do it whilst at the Festival.
So this year, we have come up with the Kite SUP Run Challenge! And if you sign up take part – you will get your kitesurfing ticket for the whole Armada weekend for FREE.
The plan is to use the first leg of the GUINNESS WORLD RECORD mile as the first part of the new Challenge. You kite your one mile with everyone else, break a record (hopefully) and land when you are ready at the public beach. Then, you store your gear in an assigned spot, and begin your run, in wetsuit, back to the festival. (Hundreds of people running through Hayling in their wetsuits should be quite a site!) You get back to the beach where a SUP is waiting for you with your name on – you jump on and paddle the same route, a mile along the coast, back to the finish and your gear. Medals and glory await, and a nice coach to take you home this time.
Sound fun? Of course it sounds fun! And you just need to set yourself a £100 fundraising target and your kitesurfing ticket and rashie are free. What’s more, with the new registration system we are using, Race Nation, your fundraising page is automatically set up as you register so you don’t have to do anything – just send it round and tell people what you are doing!
There will be fantastic prizes for our top individual fundraisers, youngest and oldest participants and fancy dress – and we also have one special prize for teams…
The Golden Rashie and Downwinder Prize
If between a team of 4 kitesurfers a total of £4,000 is raised for charity, you will trigger a very special prize.
Not only we will commission bespoke golden rash vests for all your team members, but we will cover the costs of your own personal safety boat to accompany you on any length of downwinder you want at a time of your choosing over the following year. Your downwinder must take place in one day – and the route must be agreed as safe and achievable with the RIB company – but apart from that you can plan your epic downwinder yourself. Good luck!
Fundraising for the Armada Trust and Virgin Unite
Over recent years we have supported youth charities, overseas charities and rescue charities such as the RNLI and Serve On. It has been fantastic to be able to help in a big way, as over £160,000 has been raised to date.
We recently launched the first ever Kite & SUP Youth Tour with Armada Trust funding – and we really want the Festival to be able to continue to support the grassroots of our sport going forward.
So this year your fundraising will support two clear areas:
1) It will enable us to develop the Youth Tour project, enabling children and young people who would otherwise never have a chance to participate in kitesports to get involved and get linked in with their local kite and SUP schools.
2) It will support the fantastic work of Virgin Unite both in the UK and Internationally
If you don’t fancy the Kite SUP Run Challenge but would like to support our fundraising efforts through the Armada Trust, you can make an online donation at Virgin Money Giving. Every donation makes a difference, so whatever you can give, thank you – we are very grateful for your support.
Registrations for kitesurfers to participate in the Virgin Kitesurfing Armada 2017 is now open. Your ticket gets you your event rash vest (this year made from recycled plastic bottles) and access to any kitesurfing activity going on over the weekend including all safety cover too. And don’t forget if you sign up for the Kite SUP Run Challenge – you get your weekend kitesurfing ticket for FREE!
