Since 2008 The Urban Vocal Group have been providing free access to singing and other music making activities to young people aged 11 - 18 living in Portsmouth and the surrounding area. Their ethos of inclusion and integration has enabled hundreds who would not normally have the opportunity to aspire and achieve in life through participation in music.

About The UVG
The Urban Vocal Group (UVG) was formed in Havant in 2008 to provide free access to vocal tuition and performance opportunities for young people aged 11 – 18 living in disadvantaged areas. We specialise in group vocals, composition, performance and recording and deliver free weekly sessions and training opportunities regardless of ability or experience. Since forming, over 380 young people have been actively involved with the UVG resulting in 12,000+ attendances to 630 sessions. We currently have an average of 80 young people per week attending projects in Havant, Portsmouth and Chichester. Our participants come from a range of social, personal and economic circumstances many of whom have additional physical, emotional or learning support needs.

Where we work and context
The UVG work in some of the most deprived areas in Hampshire (Leigh Park, Portsmouth City) where the opportunity for young people to reach their full potential is greatly reduced.  Music making can have an extremely powerful impact on our everyday life- it can improve confidence and self-esteem, ease feelings of stress and anxiety and even benefit physical health. For young people, the benefits can be even more vital; providing a safe space to take part in something they love whilst socialising with other young people from different backgrounds. It can also give those who are quiet or disadvantaged a voice to express themselves and an opportunity to feel comfortable in their own skin. Unfortunately, as many of these services are expensive some of the most deprived young people, who would benefit from participation, are unable to take part. The UVG addresses this by providing singing and other music making activities free to young people.

The difference that we make
The UVG gives any young person aged 11 – 18 the opportunity to develop new skills and provides a safe place for them to pursue their musical interests with others who share the same passion. What we do not only encourages excellent music making but also builds confidence and raises aspiration; enabling young people to make positive life choices during what can be a difficult period in their lives. Furthermore, by remaining free of charge we ensure that they all have the opportunity to benefit from participation regardless of their circumstances.

Our Outcomes
Improved wellbeing
Better chances in education and employment
Stronger families and communities
Professional development
Social cohesion

The UVG promotes a positive image of young people, showing that they can, and do, achieve given the right environment. Music making encourages them to express themselves and focus on something that develops confidence, self-esteem and a pride in what they do. At a time when young people are increasingly feeling marginalised it is more important now than ever to invest in them by encouraging citizenship, entrepreneurism and a willingness to aspire and achieve.
